Straps are key!

My son uses this backpack (in blue) for kindergarten. When school started he was slightly over 46 inches tall, and it fit him with the straps tightened all the way. Now that he is wearing it over a bulky coat, we have to loosen the straps a little. It fits his folder and lunch box and sneakers, as well as a stuffed animal or sweatshirt, etc.
The best things about this backpack are the sternum strap and "bulky items strap" (as my son calls it after seeing the L.E. video :) The sternum strap really helps the straps stay up on his little shoulders, especially over a coat, and the outside strap is what holds his snowpants, jacket if it warms up, library book bag, etc. The water bottle pockets work fine, but he usually uses them for his hat and sunglasses. I love that the extra storage, except the small pocket, is visible, because sometimes with him it's out-of-sight, out-of-mind, and this makes it so he can find things more easily. Also, the external storage means the pack can fit his back properly, and yet hold all the stuff he sometimes needs, while most backpacks for young children can't really do both at once.
There is a thin folder sleeve inside, but it's too hard for a kindergartener to use for that. We use it to separate out his extra clothes from the rest of his stuff. A slightly wider sleeve with stiffer fabric would be helpful, as his folder certainly could use some protection sometimes! Also, putting it against the back panel rather than the front flap would be more solid.
What I don't like about this bag is the straps. Their placement and width are good for a young child, but they are also them thinner than the larger sizes (though still better than average backpacks,) and the mesh lining feels kind of rough to me. I wouldn't want to carry it wearing a tank top. But my son says it doesn't bother him. We love the blue/navy/yellow color combination - keep those colors coming!
We did purchase the medium size in Sears for my younger son at the end of the season (so they could have the same color - less fighting!) and seems much longer, although the measurements are drastically different on paper. I would say it doesn't fit "properly" on my older son, who is almost 4 feet tall, though he certainly can wear it. The straps are thicker, wider, and further apart. I would definitely recommend the size small for average kindergarteners if they're going to carry their own backpack.

my daughter originally wanted the pink one but decided this was a good second choice. lots of practical features to stash her things, like the pockets inside and out. the chest strap feature is nice. my son had an earlier model where the lunch kit snaps on; it was very handy.

A very sweet backpack!

As backpacks go, today's kindergartners have probably had one of each of the character and animal ones over the course of their Nursery School years! My grandaughter finds the fit of this backpack to be very comfortable, and just loves the embroidered fabric and colors - perfect for "the big girl school".

So cute and perfect for Kindergarten!

My 5 year old daughter loves her new backpack! She loves purple and this has just enough. I like that the bag is mostly black to hide scuffs and dirt. The embroidered print is really pretty without being childish, too. It fits her 44 inch, 43 lb frame perfectly and the front harness holds the shoulder straps in place. This is the only pack that I've seen with one. I love the loop at the top for attaching the lunchbox, but I do wish Lands End would put a "how-to" in the bag, because I connected it in three different ways before I even noticed the loop! It is a little tricky to thread the lunchbox handle through the loop, but if she has trouble, I'll just attach a carabiner instead and it will still work great.
It seems durable and roomy enough, which was my biggest concern. It is large enough to hold a 1.5" binder, and size 11 snow boots with room to spare. Being able to attach the lunchbox to the outside frees up tons of space on the inside.
You can't go wrong with this backpack. Even the 9 year old girls in the neighborhood loved it!

Super Cute Lunch Bag

I bought this for my daughter starting Kindergarten soon, so we haven't used it yet, but it's really cute and matches the backpack we got her. It does seem a little larger than some bags we have seen, but not so much that we wouldn't use it. It does seem to be insulated much better than lunch bags we've seen at stores. So far, very happy with it!

Not sturdy enough

It's a great size and weight, and has great features and looks cute without being too girly, BUT a hole formed on only the 4th day of use. It does get some rough treatment at day camp. Their backpacks are on the floor and probably get knocked around a bit, but I really think a kid's backpack should be able to take more than that. There is thick canvas at the base, but just in front of that, between the base and the outside pocket is a very thin material. That's what wore away. There was an umbrella in the bag near the front, so that probably accelerated wear. But seriously, 4 days? I am getting a replacement only because my girl loves it, but she is going to have to treat it very gently.

Just the thing for my granddaughter whose Dad said, "Please get something the right size, sturdy, not pink." We all love it. I especially like the strap across the chest that holds the straps together.
